چکیده

AbstructWe report on the development of low-noise quasioptical SIS mixers for the frequency range 400-850 GHz. The mixers utilize twin-slot antennas, two-junction tuning circuits, and Nb-trilayer junctions. Fourier-transform spectrometry has been used to verify that the frequency response of the devices is well predicted by computer simulations. The 400-850 GHz frequency band can be covered with four separate fixed-tuned mixers. We measure uncorrected double-sideband receiver noise temperatures around S h u / k ~ to 700 GHz, and better than 540 K at 808 GHz. These results are among the best reported to date for broadband heterodyne receivers.

A Dual-Polarized Slot Antenna for Millimeter Waves - Antennas and Propagation, IEEE Transactions on

We describe a new dual-polarized slot antenna to be used with quasi-optical devices such as superconductor-insulatorsuperconductor (SIS) mixers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The radiation and impedance characteristics of the antenna were obtained from a moment-method calculation. The antenna has an excellent radiation pattern, a low impedance, wide bandwidth, and low cross polari...

SIS Junctions for Millimeter and Submillimeter Wave Mixers

We have developed a process for the fabrication of highquality Nb/AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions with small area and high current densities for the heterodyne mixers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. Their dc I-V curves are numerically studied, including the broadening of quasiparticle density of states resulting from the existence of an imaginary part of the gap energy of Nb. We have foun...

A Wide-bandwidth, Low-noise Sis Receiver Design for Millimeter and Submillimeter Wavelengths

In principle, millimeter and submillimeter heterodyne receivers using state-of-the-art SIS detectors are capable of extremely large instantaneous bandwidths with noise temperatures within a few Kelvin of the quantum limit. We are applying modern design tools, such as 3D electromagnetic simulators and Caltech’s SuperMix SIS analysis package, to develop a new generation of waveguide SIS mixers wi...

Quasi-optical submillimeter-wave SIS mixers with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions

We report on low-noise heterodyne mixing with NbN/A1N/NbN tunnel junctions in the submillimeter-wave region for the first time. The receiver consists of the quasi-optical NbN SIS mixer with an integrated tuning circuit in which a radial short stub tuner is incorporated to resonate out the junction capacitance for RF matching and a balanced IF circuit for broadband IF matching. The prepared NbN ...

Characterization of submillimetre quasi-optical twin-slot double-junction SIS mixers

We report on the continuing development of submillimetre quasi-optical slot antenna SIS mixers, which use two-junction tuning circuits. Direct and heterodyne Fourier transform spectrometer measurements have been performed to compare device performance with predictions. Demonstrated double-sideband receiver noise temperatures of better than 540 K at 808 GHz make these SIS mixers substantially be...
